The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure, hidden in a field. (Mt. 13:44)
Most families, if not all, are bound in love together. The children are precious, especially in the hearts of their parents. They are the apple of their eyes. My mother used to say to her children: ‘you are dear to us’. No one is less or more, but equally loved.
What is that precious thing that a mother or a father can see in their child? What child would say, ‘I am precious’? All of us are called children of God by the Sacrament of baptism. We are created in His image and likeness and thus we are precious. Precious not only to our parents, loved ones, and friends but above all to God.
Jesus said the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field. What can anyone say about this? Whatever an individual says from his or her heart, it has meaning. It is a realization in life.
The kingdom of heaven is, indeed, like a treasure to be found. The kingdom for me is the presence of God. Jesus is the treasure, full of love. Where there is God, there is love. Where there is love, there is the kingdom of heaven.
To find the treasure needs effort and zeal. When I found Christ in my life I gave up everything and offered my whole being to God. I entered the religious life and was inspired by the very words of God:
Set your heart first on the kingdom and justice of God and all these things will also be given to you. (Mt 6:33)
Jesus is the treasure of my life, a treasure to hold gently with sincere love. He is the treasure – not to be kept and possessed. His love is to be shared to all, especially those near to us, our brothers and sisters most in need, the orphans and the poor. May I become love as Jesus is love.
Each one is precious in the sight of God who loves us as we are. We are His precious ones in His image and likeness. May we love others as God loves us. Glory and praise be given to God forever!
Have you found your treasure? Once you do find it, give praise and thank God.
O God, thank you for letting me find you, the God and treasure of my life. Amen!
