Tomorrow, February 10, is Ash Wednesday on which we experience the imposition of ashes on our forehead and a day of Fasting and Abstinence.
Ash Wednesday ushers us into the season of Lent – the springtime of the Church, a time of growth and spiritual revitalization for Christians. Christians are reminded of the most important practices to follow Christ: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Prayer connects us with God, helps us remain in His love, listen to Him speaking to us, pour out to him our hearts’ desires and offer him our praise and thanksgiving. Fasting and almsgiving connect us to ourselves and others, and curtail our desires and needs in order to reach out to the needy.
The formulae, “Remember man you are dust and unto dust you shall return” and “Turn away from sin and believe the gospel” invite us to take the path of repentance and renewal, basing our lives on the foundation of the word of God and knowing that our life in this world is but transitory. (God’s Word 2016)
May this Lenten Season find us more frequent in time of prayer, doing acts of charity and offering loving service to those who are most in need.
